This web site is dedicated to recording the history of a small township called Clare in North Queensland, Australia.

There are two other towns in Australia named Clare, one in the wine growing district of South Australia and the other in central New South Wales.

Farming is the primary industry in the Clare district. Sugar cane is grown on many farms along with a great diversity of different crops including small crops for market. The Burdekin River provides a supply of near reliable water for irrigation.

The actual township of Clare consists of a couple of shops, a primary school, The Clare Club and a few dozen dwelling houses. Much of Clare's population live on surrounding farms.

Before postcodes were introduced to Australia there was always confusion between between the different Clares. Clare became known as Claredale (within the postal system) to differentiate it from the other towns named Clare to avoid mail problems. Since postcodes were introduced, Claredale has changed back to being Clare.
